A Brief History of KSW and Celebrate Your Body
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Kearny Street Workshop is the oldest multi-disciplinary Asian Pacific American arts organization in the country. We have a wide variety of programs each year that cover different artistic disciplines. Celebrate Your Body began as KSW Runway, our yearly fashion show, but in 2013 we took the showcase into a new direction focusing on messages of body positivity and rejecting one-size-fits-all standards.
The event itself was a fashion show, underground music showcase, and expo. There were musical acts, performers, and local vendors in the house that gave it a kind of street fair type vibe. It was really a fun night.
So, they asked the question, “How do you celebrate your body?”
I celebrate my body by practicing self-care. This means getting enough rest, nurturing my body, and most importantly, loving myself for who I am and what I look like. I also celebrate my body by decorating it with ink that mean something dear to me.
So, now I ask, how do YOU celebrate your body?
