For a while now, I’ve been on the search for a sheer maxi dress that I can only wear high-waist panties and a bra under. Another thrift shop session a couple of weeks ago with my girlfriend had me feeling pretty bold as I found a really cute sheer floral dress! Yay! I wasn’t blown away when I first saw it on the hanger as it has a straight cut (no waistline) and I don’t normally go for cuts like that. I figured, since I have 300 other things to try on, I’d give it a shot. I put it on over just my undergarments. I wasn’t wearing a belt that day but I did have a purse that had a skinny, removable cross-body strap in a nice cognac color, so I cinched it around my waist. You have to work with what you have! I called my girlfriend in for her opinion, explained what shoes and accessories I would wear it with, and she approved.
I paired the 80s dress with Gee Wawa Clarissa Wedges, a tan skinny belt, a Mark by Avon leaf necklace I’ve had for several years, a vintage purse I picked up at a second-hand store in San Francisco over a decade ago, a metal hinge square bangle, and nothing but black high-waist panties and a bra underneath.
I was feeling bold, as I don’t normally expose my midsection or my thighs but I felt sexy and confident. The high-waist panties do not expose my cheeks, and my bra is mostly full coverage. Being a bigger size, I have to be very mindful with choosing coverage. I would be uncomfortable wearing undergarments that exposed my cheeks or way more cleavage and the discomfort would definitely show. Sexy doesn’t always mean “expose everything”. I think there is a very thin line between trashy and classy. Just make sure things fit you, regardless of what size is indicated on the tag. It’s all about how you carry yourself and how you feel in it. Sometimes we get too caught up in sizes, even being a bit in denial. For example, you normally wear a size 10. A certain brand runs smaller but you insist that you squeeze into it just because it’s “your size”. I usually wear a size 14/XL in most brands but I also have a variety of size 16s and XXXLs. I even have clothes that are size medium and size 8. It just all depends on how you want to look and what fits your body.
So, go out there, be bold, be beautiful, be YOU.
