Joy Johnston of Joy Hat Club inspired me from the moment I met her. She is one of the most creative women I’ve met. What I love most about her work is that she too uses recycled materials in her hats and clothing. Since Joy and her work are very inspirational, I decided to ask her a few questions.
What kind of crafts do you know how to do? When did you start?
Crochet, sew, bead, macrame, collage, multimedia, art car, reconstruction sew, re-use multimedia art, clothing, household items, mail art, hand embroidery, industrial sewing, pattern making, decorating (funk-shui), clever re-purposing of throw-away consumerism items… I haven’t learned to tat yet, but I will…
What motivated you to launch Joy Hat Club?
I was making too many hats to give away as gifts.
Can you talk about what inspires you?
I am inspired by texture, pattern and colors. Re-using single-use consumer items is important to me. I enjoy making things that are affordable for everyone and am moved by inspiring the young to be creative. Keeping the handmade arts alive is very important to me.
Is there a different inspiration behind every piece?
Sometimes, but not always. The pieces usually create themselves. I usually don’t have a pre-conceived notion of how I want something to turn out. I do sometimes make custom items by request, but I find that much more challenging and stagnating for my creative side.
Do you ever make identical pieces? Why or why not?
It is difficult for me to make two of the same thing… unless someone is paying me and I have a pattern. Most things I create for fun and sale are OOAK [one-of-a-kind] and have no pattern.
Why recycled materials/repurposing?
The resources on this planet are finite and we should act accordingly. I believe in the 7 generation idea and that we should think about what will happen next to every item we throw away. It may go out of our sight, but it does not go away.
Do you have a favorite recycled item that you like to use? If so, what is it and why?
My “favorites” change all the time… I have a hard time repeating myself. What I like right now is reconstructioning jeans, t-shirts and re-using aluminum can pull tabs… I guess my all time favorite is yarn.
What is your philosophy on fashion?
I believe that Fashion should be Individual and Funk-tional First and should Never cost an arm and a leg.
